Eugenia Couoh es artista visual dedicada principalmente a la fotografía. Su trabajo se centra en la representación de la mujer en sus diferentes facetas, siendo la madurez la que más le interesa actualmente. Para Couoh, el tema central de su obra tiene que ver con las experiencias que ella misma ha vivido como mujer en Latinoamérica.
Formaliza su aprendizaje en técnica fotográfica participando en diversos diplomados de fotografía como “Fotonarrativa y nuevos medios” Fundación Pedro Meyer entre otros, así como seminarios, cursos y talleres que complementan su formación como fotógrafa y artista visual. Fue seleccionada para participar en diversas residencias de investigación y seminarios de formación fotográfica en la Fototeca Juan C. Méndez, del Consejo Estatal para la Cultura y las Artes, como son el seminario-taller de “Curaduría y Edición de proyectos Fotográficos” y la residencia de investigación en “Arquitectura Histórica de Puebla en el acervo Juan C. Méndez.” (2012).
En 2017-2018 cursó el diplomado “Introducción al arte contemporáneo” ofrecido por el MUAC (Museo universitario de Arte Contemporáneo de la UNAM) y el Museo Amparo de Puebla en el cual ha sido tallerista impartiendo el taller “Introducción a la fotografía como lenguaje artístico”.
Su más reciente proyecto fotográfico “Re-producción. La Revolución de la mujer madura”, es una propuesta estética a través del retrato fotográfico que abre un diálogo sobre la madurez femenina y cómo esta se percibe en la sociedad actual. En el 2019, en el marco del día internacional de la mujer, Couoh expuso dicha serie fotográfica en la Fototeca del estado «Juan C. Méndez», con el apoyo de la secretaría de turismo y Museos de Puebla y posteriormente en el Centro cultural universitario de la universidad autónoma de Tlaxcala (UAT-CCU). Parte de esta serie participó en la exposición colectiva “La Fantástica Construcción Femenina” en la galería Plataforma Art-Base, en el marco del festival FOTO MÉXICO 2019, el cual se desarrolló bajo el título “Mujeres”, y posteriormente en el Museo Taller Erasto Cortés (MUTEC).
A raíz de la pandemia del 2020, como trabajo de introspección, Couoh ha insertado en su trabajo fotográfico la intervención con bordado y textiles buscando dotar a sus fotografías de un nuevo significado. El confinamiento y el aislamiento social le indujeron a proponernos a través de su trabajo, una nueva forma de ver el mundo desde una mirada feminista y femenina.
Eugenia también se ha interesado siempre por los procesos antiguos de la fotografía, como el colodión húmedo y la cianotipia, así como el grabado y las artes gráficas. La experimentación de los diversos procesos fotográficos le permiten usar la imagen como herramienta y soporte de su discurso.
Recientemente, Couoh retomó el proyecto “Re-producción” a través de una convocatoria abierta. Dicha convocatoria es ahora parte de una muestra que se exhibirá en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Sabadell, en febrero de 2022

Eugenia Couoh is a visual artist dedicated mainly to photography. Her work focuses on the representation of women in their different stages, being maturity what she is currently interested in. For Couoh, the central object of her work has to do with the experiences that she has lived as a woman in Latin America.
She formalizes her learning in photographic technique by participating in various photography courses such as «Photo storytelling and new media diploma» at Pedro Meyer Foundation among others, as well as seminars, courses and workshops that complement her training as a photographer and visual artist. She was selected to participate in various research residencies and photographic training seminars at the Juan C. Méndez Photo Museum, such as the seminar-workshop on “Curatorship and Edition of Photographic Projects” and the residency of research in “Historical Architecture of Puebla in the Juan C. Méndez collection.” (2012).
In 2017-2018 she obtained the diploma «Introduction to contemporary art» offered by the MUAC (University Museum of Contemporary Art of the UNAM) and the Amparo Museum of Puebla, where she has been a photography teacher with the workshop «Introduction to photography as an artistic language”.
Her most recent photographic project “Re-production. The Revolution of mature women”, is an aesthetic proposal through photographic portraits that opens a dialogue on female maturity and how it is perceived today. In 2019, for the events of International Women’s Day, Couoh exhibited such photographic series at the «Juan C. Méndez» State Photo Museum, with the support of the Secretary of Tourism and Museums of Puebla and after that at the University Cultural Center of the Autonomous University of Tlaxcala (UAT-CCU). Part of this series participated in the collective exhibition «The Fantastic Female Construction» at the Platform Art-Base gallery, within the FOTO MÉXICO 2019 festival, which was held under the title «Women” and later at the Museo Taller Erasto Cortes (MUTEC).
As a result of the 2020 pandemic, as a work of introspection, Couoh has inserted the intervention with embroidery and textiles into her photographic work, seeking to give her photographs a new meaning. Her confinement and social isolation led her to propose, through her work, a new way of seeing the world from a feminist and feminine perspective.
Eugenia has also always been interested in the ancient processes of photography, such as wet collodion and cyanotype, as well as etching and graphic arts. The experimentation of her various photographic processes allows her to use the image as a tool and support for her statement.
Recently, Couoh resumed the “Re-production project” through an open call. This call is now part of an exhibition that will be exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts of Sabadell, Spain in February 2022.
Currently, she lives and works between Mexico and Barcelona.
