EUGENIA COUOH

Puebla, México. 1963.

Artista visual nacida en México, centra su trabajo en la reivindicación y deconstrucción de estereotipos relacionados con el cuerpo y el proceso de envejecimiento femenino. Su principal soporte es la fotografía y la intervención con textiles sobre la imagen. Le interesa presentar la identidad femenina como una parte ampliada de la naturaleza, trabajando el tema del paisaje sobre el cuerpo dotándolo de un nuevo significado al intervenir sus imágenes con bordado. El desnudo femenino es uno de los temas recurrentes en la historia del arte pero casi siempre desde la visión del otro, del que la observa. Eugenia ha retomado estos dos temas como herramientas para crear imágenes de un mundo femenino, complejo y fragmentado.

Su proyecto «Re-Producción. La revolución de la mujer madura», una serie de retratos fotográficos que abordan el tema del envejecimiento de las mujeres y la construcción de la identidad al dejar atrás la juventud, se ha expuesto en el 2019 en la Fototeca del estado de Puebla, Juan C. Méndez, en el Complejo Cultural de la Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala (CCU-UATx) del mismo año y como parte de la exposición colectiva “La fantástica construcción femenina” en el marco del festival Foto México, en la Plataforma Art-Base, Museo Taller Erasto Cortés y en la galería virtual MIA Art Collection asentada en Dubai. En el 2021 en España se presentó en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Sabadell y en el 2024 en la Biblioteca Central de Cerdanyola del Vallès y en el Centro Cultural Mèxic Barcelona. En 2025 se expuso en el H. Congreso del Estado de Puebla en México y en la Casa de la Cultura del Estado.

Eugenia Couoh is a visual artist born in Mexico, her work focuses on the vindication and deconstruction of stereotypes related to the female body and the aging process. Her primary tool is photography and textile interventions. She is interested in presenting female identity as an expanded part of nature, working with landscapes on the body, to give it new meaning by intervening her images with embroidery and textile. The female nude is a recurring theme in art history, but almost always from the perspective of the other, the observer. Eugenia has taken up these two themes as tools to create images of a complex and fragmented feminine world.

Her project «Re-Production. The Revolution of Mature Women,» is a series of photographic portraits that address the issue of women’s aging and the construction of identity as they grow old; it was exhibited in 2019 at the Juan C. Méndez Photo Library of the State of Puebla, at the Cultural Center of the University of Tlaxcala (CCU-UATx). The same year, and as part of the group exhibition «The Fantastic Female Construction» within the México Photo Festival, it was exhibited at the Art-Base Platform gallery, and at the Erasto Cortés Museum, and also it was part of the MIA Art Collection virtual gallery in Dubai. Since 2021 the project has been exhibited in Barcelona, Spain several times at different cultural centers like he Sabadell Academy of Fine Arts or the Mexican-Catalan association in Barcelona. In 2025, it was presented in Mexico again at the Congress House of the State of Puebla as a part of woman’s day activities and at the State House of Culture of Puebla city.

Eugenia lives and works between Mexico and Barcelona.
